Ready Player One is a novel written by Ernest Cline and released in 2011. This is a science fiction novel centering around 80’s pop culture and video games. Ready Player One is without a doubt one of the best fiction novels I have ever read. The plot is a clash between Willy Wonka, Scott Pilgrim, The Matrix, Tron, and The Hunger Games.

The story takes place in 2044 in a dystopian society where people escape their stark surroundings of poverty to enter a virtual world called The OASIS. The OASIS was created by a gamer and 80’s aficionado named James Hallidy. After Halliday learns his death is soon approaching and inspired by the game ATARI Dungeon, Halliday makes a video recorded will stating that who ever finds his three easter eggs hidden inside the OASIS will receive the prize of his entire estate worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

Ready Player One is completely packed with references from 80’s pop culture, just within the first few chapters you hear references to Oingo Boingo, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future, and plenty of other 80’s gems. The story starts a bit slow and has quite a lot of world building from Ernest Cline, some of it felt like you had to push through the material a bit. Once Wade comes across his first revelation for the first clue the story completely takes off and doesn’t let up. It is one of the most gripping and exciting stories I have ever come across. It reads like you’re playing an RPG like Zelda mixed with Dungeons and Dragons.

Ready Player One is set to become a feature film from Warner Brothers Studios and to be directed by Steven Spielberg with the screenplay by the Author himself, Ernest Cline. Gene Wilder has recently been approached for the role of James Halliday (which is perfect for the Willy Wonka aspect of the story).

This book is by far one of the most interesting things to come out in the last 4 years. It has characters that game culture can relate to like Art3mis, and the main character Wade. As well as situations that have become and will continue to be a reality for people in a world of MMORPGs, online dating, and the ever expanding relationship with people and virtual simulation technology.
